During the COP 26 meeting, prime minister Pham Minh Chinh strongly confirmed that in 2050, Vietnam will reach net-zero emission. Not just reducing greenhouse and emission gas in production or daily activity, Vietnam also has to find a way to eliminate them from the atmosphere. The amount of gas release needs to be eliminated.
Professor Huỳnh Thị Lan Hương, Deputy Director of the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Climate Change state that renewable energy needs to be developed. She added that apart from finding and using new energy sources, finding an efficient way to store energy is required too. Renewable sources like wind and solar need efficient energy storage. The Vietnamese government set that by 2030, renewable energy sources including hydroelectricity, wind power, solar power, biomass should cover at least 33% of total electricity generation and increase to 55% by 2050. Apart from planting trees and recovering forests, Vietnam encourages learning and adopting foreign knowledge and machines to help reduce emissions. Even though there’s not a lot of progress, Vietnam knows what should be done.
Even though statistics state that Vietnam doesn’t have much progress, I can still see actions being done. On April 1, 2021, the Prime Minister approved Project No. 524 with the goal that by the end of 2025, the whole country can plant 1 billion trees, of which 690 million trees are planted in urban and rural areas. 310 million trees are concentrated in many different forests. Small actions are valuable this time around. If we continue trying, Vietnam will achieve the goal.
